Katy Myers Named Citizen of the Year in Fort Smallwood, MD
Congrats are in order for Katy Myers, our fabulous publisher in Pasadena-Severna Park, MD! On May 10, 2018, she was recognized by the Fort Smallwood Optimist Club as Citizen of the Year for the work she has done in her community, particularly with her annual Act of Kindness appreciation event.
What started as a "small," intimate way to show appreciation for police officers in her county (100 handmade cards were presented that year) has turned into a county-wide appreciation event with Katy collecting 2,300 cards, organizing almost 2,000 appreciation gifts for local first responders, and providing a catered meal to those she honors. She recruits the help of children from area schools to present the cards and gifts to the policemen, firemen, and dispatchers.
2018 will mark Katy's fourth year spearheading this event and she has done much of the work herself with some support from community schools, businesses, and other organizations.
Katy says, "Not only does it feel good to say thank you to the men and women who keep us safe, it’s also an amazing way for me to connect with my community. Each year we have more and more schools participate. This past year I spent 30 minutes with students at a school in a less-advantaged part of my community discussing our first responders and why it’s important to thank them. I couldn't do this for my community without Macaroni Kid as my backbone!"
Katy was presented her award by Lt. Rodriguez of the Anne Arundel County Police Department and Dave Braun, President of the Fort Smallwood Optimist Club. The award ceremony is designed to mark the annual Respect for Law month in Anne Arundel County.
Congrats, Katy! We are so proud of you and are thankful to have you on our team!
